Preventing Diabetes in the Workforce: A Call to Action for Employers to Improve Health and Reduce Costs

Health care spending for people with diabetes is 2.3 times greater than for those without diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic health condition affecting over 37 million Americans at an annual cost of $327 billion. Diabetes can cause serious health complications resulting in reduced productivity, work-related absenteeism, unemployment from chronic disability, and premature mortality. 96 million adults in the US have prediabetes, and 84 percent don’t know they have it. In Delaware the annual prediabetes and diabetes costs are $1.1 billion. There is a solution for employers to prevent or delay diabetes in the workforce to improve health and reduce costs with the National Diabetes Prevention and Lifestyle Change Program.
At this educational program employers will learn about:
- The prevalence and cost of prediabetes and diabetes in the workforce,
- A proven, evidence-based solution to prevent or delay diabetes in the workforce with the CDC-endorsed National Diabetes Prevention Lifestyle Change Program (National DPP) that can result in cost savings and improved health,
- An employer’s experience in offering the National DPP,
- Available online and in-person diabetes prevention programs (some covered by health plans), and next steps to implement these programs.
